Jill Scott Music – – Photographed by Georgio Sabino III

Jill
The latest powerhouse joining the ranks of the one-name “songstress sisterhood” a-la Sade, Whitney, Mariah, Erykah & Mary, is the tremendously talented Jill. Sans Scott, you still tremble at the name.

Jill. Her “Beautifully Human” tour graciously made its rounds to C-town in Spring, leaving neo-soul heads and hip-hoppers lucky enough to see & hear her perform, mesmerized. Her Cleveland connection was brief but breathtaking! An unusually warm March evening outside-gave way to a buxom stage backdrop inside called Scott. The songstress silhouetted behind the velvet Playhouse curtain, was patiently waiting to bless the stage with her beauty not to mention, bomb-ass vocals! The indoor venue enhanced the natural acoustics emitting from windpipes that would not soon be forgotten.

Opening for Ms. Jill, was a label-mate. A faceless, nameless warm-up act designed to settle the roaring crowd, and create a diversion for the early birds. A sultry saxophonist followed– blowing instrumental ballads of Scott’s past playlists. The familiar tunes turned the awaiting larvae in our souls into butterflies in our bellies! SHE’S coming.

With the energy of the sax man’s odes-du-Jill still lingering. SHE stole the stage. SHE commanded her followers to their feet, and we humbly obliged. SHE could’ve commanded the sun to re-shine after retiring for the evening-and it would have done so with haste! Just her smile, her larger-than-life presence could’ve made mountains feel minuscule. “You’re here. I’m pleased. I really dig your company-y … ” and we yours, Jill. We couldn’t wait to take the Long Walk tonight.

3 songs in, Ms. Scott encouraged the entranced crowd to come closer to the stage. Despite being a mere 7 rows back, I still fought my way to the 6th, then 5th trying to come ever closer to the enigma that is SHE. We forfeited comfy seats in 7, to stand in stilettos in row 2 the rest of the show. The painful trade was well worth it.

The most palatable part of her show sprung from the song “Do You Remember?” She talked to the crowd as if she was having a “sistah-girl,” down-home talk about love and pride and just “keepin’ it real”! Her monologue reminding black men to “remember” her & other black women– to say “hello” when they see a black woman vs. turning up their noses at us. The primarily black female crowd erupted in enthusiastic applause, cheers, and “You go, girls!” Jill was speaking for us, and did it with style, poise and conviction.

Rounding out the show was “Gettin’ in the Way”, “It’s Love” and “The Way”. When Jill finally left the stage, the audience made it clear that they felt slighted-screaming out “He loves me!” … “He loves me!” Pause. “He loves me!” Silence. It seemed like forever, but Mama didn’t disappoint– returning to quench the thirsty crowd’s cries with a low, melodic hum echoing from behind the curtain. The roaring crowd grew instantly mute. Then … the ultimate serenade. “He loves meeee especialll-lly different… ever-y … time … ” SHE emerged. Again. This time, more beautiful and glowing than the first. Shrieks and screams drowned out the very tune we’d been waiting all concert to hear! “He Loves Me” lasted long .. but could’ve spanned a lifetime for all we cared-a fitting song to end not only a romantic evening, but a soulful showing from a singer who just oozes “black love.”

She sincerely & graciously thanked all of her us for “feeling” her & showing so much love. It was well earned. What’s most impressive about the melody was her “down to earth” demeanor-despite being obviously BEAT from throat to feet! As she stood stage-front, sweaty, bottled water bobbing from a bent finger, grinning like a Cheshire cat on Quaaludes tears welled up in her eyes. The pure emotion flooding those beautiful brown windows, showed her soul. And it was real. It was real. We cried right along with her.

Jill Scott is a force to be reckoned with now, and for many decades to come. She’s bringing back the lost art of love, being IN love, GIVING love & just ENJOYING life in its simplest forms. Her music spoke to us. No it roared, hummed, and howled like a beautiful banshee! Keep doing what you do, girl. We’re listening.

The Artist Georgio Sabino III

If it is a rare thing for art and industry to marry seamlessly than Georgio Sabino III is a true unicorn. He is prompt, cordial and has a very demure and subtle approach to being hospitable. This aforementioned trait allows him to a perfect fit for every occasion corporate function, wedding, concert or a mitzvah. In my eyes GS3 is the gold standard by which all other photographers are measured. Georgio is a kindred to the late Bill Cunningham of the New York Times because of his affinity and dedication to the work and the art of story telling. His desire can only be described as enthralled. His diligence is only rivaled by his passion. His passion is the flame that brews up a flavorful, hearty and smooth jambalaya of innovation, creativity. His work is magical, as it is wonderfully textured and brilliant in how vibrant the many hues of color draw you into another world; the world of the photo.  Above all things his since of urgency for promptly delivering photos is unbelievable. When he arrives upon delivery you will swear you hear the rumbling of the swaying wagons and robust horses of the pony express. Georgio is simply a pro and when he puts his signature on your memories they become classics.

RE:    GS3 INC. CONTINUES TRIUMPH OVER EDUCATIONAL GENOCIDE

As the 2016 academic year slips through the change of seasons, Sabino defies the statistics against African-American males and forges forward with living his dream – to show young people that they, too, can be successful when applying themselves with their education. Despite the state of race relations in America today, artist/teacher Georgio Sabino III demonstrates that “Black lives matter” as his civic engagement continues to document the successes and struggles of life for small businesses in America, serving as photo editor for City News among his other entrepreneurial ventures.

“Reservations for wedding season are getting pretty strong now that the winter holidays are past,” states Sabino,  whose web site, www.news.gs3.us,  already is receiving bookings.  The message feature on his site easily allows users to save a date and leave a message for a personal call or message back.  “But our team also been getting a lot of requests for Valentine’s Day photo sessions as well.”
The bigger photo event that Sabino’s planning for is the 2016 PowerNetworking Conference, May 26-28, 2016, at Gaylord National Resort in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where he is the official photographer for George Fraser, Chairman and CEO of FraserNet, Inc. “Do you realize who’s going to be there?” Sabino asks. “Invited guests include Cleveland Cavs’ star LeBron James, former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, film maker Spike Lee and others!”

Sabino was among the select few members of the media invited to the White House, where he photographed President Barack Obama with the Ohio State Buckeyes as the 2015 National College Playoff Champions, a first for OSU since 2002. As City News USA photo editor he stated, “We are a small Black-owned newspaper that covers big stories. We would be honored to take these photographs. Thank you for supporting small businesses.” Suddenly, Sabino was among a larger national press corps covering the event of a lifetime.

Following more winners, Sabino is providing ongoing coverage of the Cleveland Cavaliers as they strive for their national championship goal. Meanwhile, Sabino has followed the civic dialogues of a society still struggling to overcome the racial inequalities meant to be abolished from an era before he was even born. He continues to follow and document the protests against police brutality in Cleveland, Washington DC and elsewhere.

Sabino has long been committed to working with young people and obtained his dual masters degree in art education from Case Western Reserve University and The Cleveland Institute of Art in 2009. Concurrent with his teaching career, Sabino also has photographed hundreds of celebrities and notable political figures of our time including the late poet Maya Angelou and blues legend B.B. King. “I used to take students to [photograph] the [local sports] games as part of an extracurricular experience so that they could have a real life connection to where their art education – and education in general – could take them,” he noted.

His master’s thesis about educational genocide was a triptych of paintings that demonstrated the disparities of the educational system and eventual overcoming of the achievement gap. But in an ironic twist of fate, Sabino has become part of the statistics among 40 to 50% of teachers who leave the profession within the first five years, according to a 2014 report by the Alliance for Excellent Education.

Cited among the factors affecting these teachers were consistent overarching themes: a lack of local leadership support, teacher bashing in the press, a workload inconsistent with teacher pay, and challenging student behaviors. These and other reasons were echoed in a 2014 blog on ConversationEd.com, a 2013 article in The Atlantic (Why Do Teachers Quit?), and a 2015 article in The Guardian (Five Top Reasons People Become Teachers – and Why They Quit).

Unfortunately, Sabino is among the kind of of African-American male teachers most needed in the classroom. In a 2014 article by The Hechinger Report, A Consortium on Chicago School Research (CCSR) report found that schools serving low-income, minority students turn over half of their staffs every three years, deepening the divide between poor and wealthy students to the most experienced teachers. “I have a lot of ideas as to how we could approach education differently,” he says. “But hiring creativity for implementation in a tough economic market is not necessarily on the national list of educational priorities…”

Sabino cites author Sarah Lewis’ statement in The Rise: Creativity, The Gift of Failure and The Search for Mastery: Effective building – of bridges, of concepts, and ideas – comes from a more supple form of grit that knows when development needs to give way to discovery.

Nonetheless, Sabino’s next artistic pursuit is a follow-up to his Educational Genocide series. In his Emotional Rape series, he explores the aftermath of being caught in a broken educational system, with a subsequent series titled Wrong Verdict: Suicide or Murder and next Religion: which Mark? His teaching now is limited to private classes for students who really want to learn, and his career as an artist/photographer continues to demonstrate that resiliency of the human spirit is a wealth that can be obtained in spite of current race relations in America. In addition, his artistic pursuit is to share the new photographs of the Cleveland Cavs experience. Companies can purchase a poster with their logo on it for clients or employees.
